Now, Premium Bandai has released an updated Master Grade (MG) version with the Liao Ya Unit, offering a fresh take on this classic mobile suit. In this review, we'll explore the kit's details, build experience, and overall value to help you decide if it deserves a spot in your collection.

As a limited Premium Bandai release, the MG Shenlong Gundam EW (Liao Ya Unit) promises enhanced articulation and new accessories. But does it live up to the hype? Let's dive in and see what this kit has to offer.

Overview of the MG Shenlong Gundam EW (Liao Ya Unit)

The Shenlong Gundam EW is based on the Endless Waltz version of the mobile suit, featuring a sleek, updated design compared to the original TV series. The Liao Ya Unit is an additional equipment set that includes the iconic dragon fangs, which can be used as both ranged and melee weapons. This kit is a Premium Bandai exclusive, meaning it's produced in limited quantities and often requires pre-ordering to secure.

The box art is stunning, featuring dynamic artwork of the Shenlong in action with the Liao Ya Unit deployed. Inside, you'll find multiple runners of polystyrene plastic, a set of polycaps, a small sheet of foil stickers, and a detailed instruction manual. The kit includes parts for the standard Shenlong Gundam as well as the additional Liao Ya Unit components, making it a comprehensive package.

• Includes parts for both the standard Shenlong Gundam and the Liao Ya Unit
• Premium Bandai exclusive, limited production run
• Comes with a display base for dynamic posing

Build Experience and Engineering

Building the MG Shenlong Gundam EW is a satisfying experience that showcases Bandai's modern Master Grade engineering. The inner frame is well-designed, providing a solid foundation for the armor and allowing for smooth articulation. The kit features a mix of ABS and PS plastics, with some parts requiring careful cutting and sanding to achieve a clean finish.

The Liao Ya Unit adds a layer of complexity to the build, with the dragon fangs requiring multiple sub-assemblies. The fangs are articulated, allowing them to be posed in various attack configurations. The engineering behind the Liao Ya Unit is impressive, with hidden joints and sliding mechanisms that make the unit feel robust and functional.

• The inner frame is solid and allows for a wide range of motion
• Liao Ya Unit features articulated dragon fangs with hidden joints
• Some nub marks are in visible areas, requiring careful cleanup

Articulation and Posability

One of the highlights of this kit is its articulation. The MG Shenlong Gundam EW can achieve dynamic poses that capture the agility of the mobile suit. The shoulder joints are particularly well-designed, allowing for a wide range of movement without compromising stability. The waist has a good range of motion, and the legs can bend deeply for action poses.

The Liao Ya Unit adds to the posability, with the dragon fangs able to extend and retract. The fangs can be attached to the backpack or held in the hands, giving you multiple display options. The included display base is a welcome addition, making it easier to pose the kit in mid-air or dynamic stances.

• Excellent shoulder articulation for dramatic poses
• Dragon fangs can be displayed in multiple configurations
• Display base helps with dynamic posing, but is not a full action base

Design and Details

The MG Shenlong Gundam EW features a sleek, streamlined design that differs from the bulky original. The armor panels have sharp angles and panel lines that are perfect for detailing. The color separation is good, with most parts molded in the correct colors, though some stickers are needed for small details like the yellow accents on the chest and shoulders.

The Liao Ya Unit itself is a work of art, with intricate details and a menacing dragon motif. The fangs have a metallic green finish that stands out against the white and blue armor. The kit also includes a new head design with a more aggressive look, adding to the overall appeal.

• Sharp panel lines and good color separation
• Liao Ya Unit features a metallic green finish on the fangs
• Stickers are minimal but help add detail to smaller areas

Accessories and Extras

In addition to the Liao Ya Unit, the kit includes the standard Shenlong Gundam weapons: the beam glaive and the shield. The beam glaive can be stored on the backpack, and the shield can be mounted on the arm. The kit also comes with a set of hands, including open palms, gripping hands, and a special hand for holding the beam glaive.

The included display base is a nice touch, though it's not as robust as a full action base. It features a simple stand with a peg that connects to the kit's backpack, allowing for basic aerial poses. For more dynamic displays, you may want to invest in a separate action base.

• Includes beam glaive, shield, and multiple hand options
• Display base included, but basic
• No water slide decals; only foil stickers

Comparison to Other MG Kits

When compared to other MG kits from the Gundam Wing series, the Shenlong Gundam EW stands out due to its unique Liao Ya Unit. The kit shares some engineering with the MG Altron Gundam, but the Liao Ya Unit offers a different play experience. The articulation and detail are on par with other recent MG releases, making it a solid addition to any collection.

For collectors who enjoy third-party kits, the MG Shenlong Gundam EW offers a level of quality that is comparable to high-end third-party releases, but with the reliability and brand trust of Bandai. If you're looking for a unique build that stands out on your shelf, this kit is worth considering.

• Shares engineering with MG Altron, but offers unique Liao Ya Unit
• Quality comparable to recent MG releases
• Premium Bandai exclusivity adds to its appeal

Value and Availability

As a Premium Bandai exclusive, the MG Shenlong Gundam EW (Liao Ya Unit) is priced higher than standard MG kits. However, the additional Liao Ya Unit and the limited availability justify the premium for many collectors. If you miss the initial pre-order window, prices on the secondary market can be significantly higher, so it's wise to secure one early.

When considering value, it's important to factor in the build experience and the final display. This kit offers a satisfying build that will take several hours, and the end result is a striking centerpiece. For fans of the Shenlong Gundam or Gundam Wing in general, this is a must-have.

• Premium Bandai exclusive, so act fast if you want one
• Higher price point but justified by the Liao Ya Unit
• Secondary market prices can be steep

The Premium Bandai MG 1/100 Shenlong Gundam EW (Liao Ya Unit) is a fantastic kit that offers a unique build experience and a stunning display piece. With its excellent articulation, detailed design, and the iconic Liao Ya Unit, it's a must-have for any Gundam Wing fan or MG collector. While the price is higher than standard kits, the quality and exclusivity make it worth the investment. If you're looking to expand your collection with a standout mecha, this dragon is ready to soar.
